ARCHITECTURE III EPILOGUE & SUBJECTIVISM 2016 –
The purpose of art isn’t only an aesthetic one, it’s first and foremost also a spiritual one. It’s purpose is to communicate emotions. The true meaning of a work of art, what we want to communicate, is its subject matter, what we depict in a picture is the object matter, but the object matter is subservient to the subject matter. The idea we want to communicate, the emotion we want to evoke through the symbolic use of object matter, is primary. I don’t believe in neutral objectivity in art. I believe in the importance of the subjective expression and interpretation. Subjectivity.
ARCHITECTURE II – SEEING SHADOWS 2012 –
VISUAL ACOUSTICS – SILENCE AND LIGHT (IPA 2014 First place winner – Professionals)
The title of this series is partly a reference to the documentary film by Eric Bricker on celebrated architectural photographer Julius Shulman called Visual Acoustics. At the same time it’s a reference to the power of shadows that always played an important role in the architectural creations of architect Louis Kahn. In his architectural creations and writings Khan expressed how shadows in architecture form an essential part of light that reveal and give shape to objects and how shadows create a sense of mystery and also evoke silence and awe. These ideas are visualised in my series of photos in which the removal of “visual noise”, that is inherent to crowded urban environments, by use of emphasised shadows, plays an important role to create “visual silence”. At the same time shadows isolate the main architectural subject in a way that is directly related to the essence of photography: the presence or absence of light (shadows).
ARCHITECTURE I – LOOKING UP 2010 – 2012
FROZEN MUSIC (IPA 2011 – First Place winner – Amateurs)
A series of architectural objects that in some way represents the idea that beauty can be found in mathematics. Goethe once said that architecture is frozen music. Both architecture and music are based on mathematics so I’ve tried to find architectural objects that in some way also can be associated with music by their form, their rhythm and flow and recurring patterns. This is an ongoing series.
THE SHAPE OF LIGHT (IPA 2012 – Second Place winner – Professionals)
Architectural shapes and spaces are revealed and formed by light. At the same time light is captured in this series as a strong and almost tangible shape to emphasize its necessary existence and the strong connection between light and architecture.
